Swimming

Swimming Classes are held on Friday afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Westwood 50 Metre Swimming Pool in Fairview. The current swimming programme will run from Friday, 19th April, 2002, for eight weeks.

A Parents' Organising Committee comprising Adrienne Walsh, Patricia McLeod, Teresa Cox and Mary Burford facilitate the enrolment of pupils and supervise the swimming lessons. Enrolment works on a "first come, first served" basis on Registration Day. 37 pupils are enrolled for this term. Enrolment will begin again next September and there will be places for approximately 60 boys.

All pupils attending are expected to follow these guidelines:

  • On arrival, please inform reception.
  • Children should file into the party waiting area.
  • Access to changing rooms is only permitted 5 minutes before scheduled time. Poolside changing rooms are to be used.
  • All bags are to be stored neatly in the changing rooms. It is recommended that all belongings be locked in the lockers provided.
  • Children are to be out on the pool deck at the scheduled time, no sooner.
  • Swimming hats must be worn and any child requiring armbands must supply their own.
  • As children come out of the changing room, they must wait in the party waiting area until everyone is ready to leave together.
  • We ask that for the comfort of everyone using the club that noise be kept to a minimum.
  • Lifeguards and Instructors must be obeyed at all times.
  • Please leave facilities as you would like to find them.

History of Swimming at St. David's

Down the years, from 1969 to 1981, we were today blessed in the school to have the use of a swimming pool on our doorstep in St. David's C.B.S. Secondary school.

However, this great facility sadly closed in 1981. Cyril Hardy, a former champion swimmer and team captain of the Irish International Swimming Team, was our swimming teacher and coach and, under Cyril's experienced tutelage, every boy in the school learned the rudiments of swimming. The annual swimming gala was a very popular event. Pupils were also introduced to life saving and many of the pupils became highly skilled in this important aspect of swimming. Some of the pupils, such as Martin Coughlan and Earl McCarthy swam, at a later stage, for Ireland.
