| In 1999 one of our parents, Ronnie Bradshaw,
suggested the setting up of Basketball coaching for the pupils as an extra-curricular
activity. Ronnie is a qualified basketball coach and he volunteered his
services to us to establish basketball in the school. The local Artane/Beaumont
Family Recreation Centre was booked for classes on Tuesday and Wednesday
afternoons and in a short space of time 50 pupils from the 4th, 5th &
6th classes were being coached in this new sporting discipline. Once it
was seen that it was popular amongst the pupils, the school ordered a set
of outdoor basketball stanchions and requisitioned a company to mark out
the Back Yard with permanent markings for basketball. In its third year in existence school teams were entered for the Inter-schools Basketball League and the fruits of all the hard work were shown when the Junior team got to the final of the 2002 League against St. Assam's, Raheny. Victory eluded us in the final but the foundation is laid for the future. The basics of a worthwhile sporting pursuit are being imparted and pupils are being facilitated in participating in an enjoyable leisure activity. |
