Basketball
In 1999 one of our parents, Ronnie Bradshaw, suggested the setting up of Basketball coaching for the pupils as an extra-curricular activity. Ronnie is a qualified basketball coach and he volunteered his services to us to establish basketball in the school. The local Artane/Beaumont Family Recreation Centre was booked for classes on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and in a short space of time 50 pupils from the 4th, 5th & 6th classes were being coached in this new sporting discipline. Once it was seen that it was popular amongst the pupils, the school ordered a set of outdoor basketball stanchions and requisitioned a company to mark out the Back Yard with permanent markings for basketball.
In its third year in existence school teams were entered for the Inter-schools Basketball League and the fruits of all the hard work were shown when the Junior team got to the final of the 2002 League against St. Assam's, Raheny. Victory eluded us in the final but the foundation is laid for the future. The basics of a worthwhile sporting pursuit are being imparted and pupils are being facilitated in participating in an enjoyable leisure activity.

Letter to parents :

Re: Basketball Coaching/Extra Curricular Activity

Dear Parents,
At the moment in the school we are trying to provide basketball as an extra curricular activity for the pupils of the 4th & 5th classes. We have rented the ABFRC Hall for two sessions on Tuesdays (for 4th classes) and Wednesdays (for the 5th classes) for classes between 2.45p.m. and 3.45p.m. We have also enlisted the services of a qualified basketball coach, Ronnie Bradshaw, who is a parent of a pupil in the school.
It is hoped to start the basketball sessions during next week, Tuesday 9th November and Wednesday 10th November.
Please note the following:
· Only those pupils who have the written consent of their parents will be allowed to participate. Please fill in the attached sheet and return to the school on or before the 1st session

· The sessions will end at 3.45 p.m., approximately, each day and parents should make appropriate arrangements for their participating son to be collected or escorted home at that time

· Basketball equipment will be provided but appropriate clothing and runners will be the responsibility of the participant

· Only those boys with the required clothing and footwear will be allowed participate.

· There will be no cost for this activity.

Yours Sincerely,
