From its inception in 1968, St. David's has always been an active member of Cumann na mBunscol - the association which look after gaelic games and athletics for primary schools in Dublin. From humble beginnings at its first 'Santry Sports' in 1969, St. David's, in a short few years, became one of the premier schools in Dublin for track and field athletics culminating in a glorious seven year spell from 1977 to 1983 when the school was overall best school on four consecutive years and runners-up on three others. Down the years pupils have won gold at every event and this proud tradition continues to the present day. In 1992 and 1993 the school relay teams won gold in the Under 11 and Under 12 events. Many of our past pupils have won National awards in various sporting disciplines and some have represented Ireland in the international sporting areas of the world. Noel Harvey and Ciaran McDunphy are two such athletes. One of our athletes, Aidan Lambert, will be remembered as our best ever individual athlete while in primary school. At one memorable Santry Sports in 1980 he won gold in the Sprint and Long Jump events and later that afternoon helped the School relay team to victory. This achievement resulted in Aidan being declared Best Athlete of the 1980 sports. |

Cross country is one of those sporting events where the last man on the team is as important as the first. Boys from the school have been encouraged and trained for a long number of years, to participate in the Inter-School Cross Country Championships and Leagues. St. David's was a founder member of the Inter Schools Championship and who initiated and still organises the Cross Country League. Again, our teams have been successful in taking gold at every level and for eight years in a row, our 'A' team were champions. Damien Keogh has the proud distinction of being the only athlete to win all twelve events over a two year period in the League while a pupil in fifth and sixth classes. In any one race up to forty of our pupils participate making it the event with the highest participation amongst the pupils. With up to 40 pupils from the school in any one race, this makes it the single most important event for pupil participation. |
